jarxis

Jarxis is a very old, mildly insane, highly irritable, slightly paranoid Leprechaun Armorer. He possesses a calculating intelligence that he employs to gather resources to free his people. He can feel remorse over doing bad things, but is perfectly fine operating in morally gray areas of it furthers his goals. He's a skilled craftsman with a wide array of scientific knowledge and a creative outlook on how magic can be employed. [There is a TL;DR at the end summarizing his backstory if you don't feel like reading all this]

  • Character Name: Jarxis Euclid
  • Character Pronouns: He/Him
  • Player Name: Jim W
  • Player Pronouns: He/Him
  • Character Class: Artificer - Armorer
  • Lineage: Leprechaun (mechanically Eladrin)
  • Level: 6

Jarxis lived much of his life as a typical leprechaun. He guarded his pot of gold, he ran around so much he wore out his boots, he fixed his boots, ran around more, tricked wayward travelers with the promise of wishes but delivered pranks. One such traveler by the name of Derg Hammertoe was the victim of a patented Jarxis trick where he unknowingly gave up his name, and Jarxis refused to give it back. Derg was from a long line of Hammertoes, and became distraught that he could no longer consider himself part of his clan without his name. He begged Jarxis to return his name and offered to trade his considerable skills as an Artificer and Blacksmith if Jarxis returned his name. Jarxis originally just intended for the whole thing to be a funny joke, but Jarxis found that he greatly enjoyed crafting, enchanting, and smithing. To fulfill the exchange Jarxis took Derg to a part of the feywild where time moved more slowly [dealers choice where this is]. Over the course of 5-10 years Derg trained Jarxis to be a master Smith and artificer, in return Jarxis did give back his name and guided him back to the prime material plane roughly where & when he came from (where he presumably still lives).

After repairing his boots for the 400th time Jarxis decided he could make a better pair of boots that didn't wear out so quickly. Using a makeshift bellows (made from the necromantically preserved body of a greedy fat goblin) and a fire (made from fossilized faeries and dryads) he was able to melt down his pot of gold and hammer it into two metal shoes (an odd alloy of iron worked with charcoal using the gold for decoration).

The metal shoes no longer wore out, leaving Jarxis with a massive amount of extra time on his hands. Jarxis used his newfound free time to teach himself the sciences of alchemy and poisons. Jarxis continued his quest for knowledge in a part of the feywild that was very secluded and he spoke to practically no one for almost a hundred years. This long isolation was merely because he enjoyed solitude and this new knowledge he was unearthing. The constant contact with iron would have been deadly to Jarxis if he had not discovered an odd combination of chemicals that allowed him to tolerate the iron. The chemicals virtually eliminated all of Jarxis's leprechaun magic, but he hardly noticed, he was far too focused on his pursuit of science. As a side effect of the isolation (and possibly due to the constant ingestion of chemicals) Jarxis is not entirely sane and has some issues with differentiating reality from fantasy sometimes. Eventually Jarxis found a way to suspend the necessary chemicals into rigid little pieces with a hardened foam like consistency and sharp edges. He eats a bowl of these hard little foam pieces every morning(as part of a balanced breakfast). He refers to this food that keeps him alive as his “charms” and he thinks that they increase his chances of fortuitous occurrences. Jarxis is very defensive of this chemical mixture as without it, he would likely die. Anyone attempting to steal this food from Jarxis would be met with irrational anger and pursuit to the ends of the earth.

After a long period of isolation and mastery of his crafts Jarxis decided he wanted to share his knowledge with others in the feywild. He returned to some semblance of social life and began cavorting with other fey compatriots. He taught his oldest friend (a leprechaun named Crowley Twangle) the art of making explosives, totally unaware that his friend had become a radicalized “freedom fighter” in the intervening hundred years. Crowley began planting pumpkin carriage bombs and unstable rainbow generators in areas to disadvantage the Seelie court. He was convinced the Seekie’s political machinations and extremely cliquey gatekeeping of whimsy was hurting the feywild and all fey peoples.

Leprechauns in general were looked down upon by the Seelie court, considered basically low borne fey. In the intervening time Jarxis lived in isolation an ambitious Spriggan named Penculous rose to power within the Seelie court and began blaming all their problems on Leprechauns. Opinions soured, and soon Leprechauns were all viewed with suspicion for crimes of any type as well as minor day to day inconveniences. It became a sport among Seelie nobles to find elaborate or circuitous logic to blame a leprechaun for something. Because of this Jarxis found many of his childhood friends to be imprisoned, mostly for crimes they never committed. Jarxis began working with Crowley to establish a resistance against the Seelie courts tyranny over Leprechauns. They began calling themselves the ‘Leprechauns Operating Stealthily Endeavoring Rearrangement of the Seelie’ (LOSERS for short). The only members of their band of freedom fighters not in prison includes:

  • Brambletongue - which is basically a tree dressed as a Leprechaun. Doesn't move much, rarely talks, but provides a good alibi. Can be found at the local watering hole (literally a small pond where fey creatures drink the shimmer water).
  • Candyland - an effeminate minotaur with serious ventriloquism and acting skills. Their illusion magic is unparalleled.
  • Yerbie - a squat looking dwarven leprechaun who is always looking for a fight. Quick to anger and ferocious with improvised weapons.
  • Ophelia - a short alluring beardless leprechaun known for her flirtatious attitude and skills as a seamstress.
  • Oatie - a centaur leprechaun with the legs of an ass. Idealist daydreamer with delusions of granduer, known for his terrible puns and abysmal dad jokes. A hopeless romantic he falls in love with anything and everything. Gifted bard, can hold a crowd with his bagpipes.
  • Pinch - slender downtrodden leprechaun that is easily overlooked. He frequently breaks into places he's not permitted to play pranks, but is never caught. He's slippery, sneaky, creative, and resourceful.

The LOSERS had committed several acts of high visibility violence against the filigreed high heeled jackboot of their Seelie oppressors. They became a thorn in the side of the established order and drew the ire of Penculous’s enforcers. Most of the LOSERS membership were rounded up and thrown in Seelie imprisonment, including Crowley (Jarxis's oldest friend). Seeking resources and aid the LOSERS turned to the Unseelie Court for assistance, assuming that they would be willing to help their cause. Jarxis offered them knowledge, technology, and most importantly explosives in return for their help. Several on the Unseelie side were very open to aiding their cause (as a middle finger to the Seelie) and began to use some of Jarxis's inventions and explosives to great effect.

The Unseelie even managed to capture some territory from the Seelie at the great battle of the Grentall Woods using one of Jarxis's greatest inventions the Bombast Cannon. The sustained rainbow hellfire of the Bombast Cannon leveled the woods and killed hundreds of Seelie fey before the region was captured. Just as some of the Unseelie higher ups were starting to come around to using Jarxis's technology an opposing Fey artificer by the name of Walfo McBeans caught the ear of Dourshill The Arbiter of Merriment and Whimsy, a powerful functionary within the Unseelie Court. Walfo convinced Dourshill that the technology Jarxis was provided was hideous and unbecoming of proper fey fashion. Walfo offered instead his own inventions made from more suitable materials for fey (roots, crystals, leaves, moss, and magic). Walfo loves mushrooms and toads, and carries along with him an amulet that contains a bound toad-demon. These inventions were much less effective, but more aesthetically pleasing to the Unseelie, and because of this Jarxis soon fell out of favor with the Unseelie as well. Walfo even went so far as to frame Jarxis for stealing gumballs to fill the dispenser machine outside his home in the feywild. This was completely untrue, the “gumball machine” in front of his house actually dispensed Dumb-balls which are basically Gobstoppers so sour they could cause your face to suck into itself and temporarily make you forget things.

In a last ditch effort to prove his worth to the Unseelie he stole a powerful artifact that was gifted to Walfo for his service to the court (really just Walfo taking credit for Jarxis's victory at Grentall Woods). This artifact is known as the Matryoshkazafelbannia, or more commonly referred to as the Prime Babushka. This artifact is actually the source of all nesting dolls in the world, powerful interdimensional magics allow infinite nesting dolls to be pulled from this artifact with no limit. Walfo and his patron Dourshill had taken out a bounty on Jarxis for his theft, but Jarxis escaped to the prime material plane. Jarxis plans to gather resources to build the Prime Babushka into an engine of unlimited power, or possibly the biggest bomb one or the other. Either way he needs a lot of resources to build it, so he's been taking any work he can find to make money.

Jarxis engages in several businesses to aid him in gathering resources. He operates an alchemy shack on the outskirts of Kognombia. He frequently travels to Quasqueton Keep to use the liberated magical forge there for the crafting of magical weapons. Jarxis's most successful business is an arcane and mechanical vacuum cleaner he built into several tenements in Little Feytown in Kognombia. Each major room in the building has a tube that leads down to the central vacuum machinery in the basement of the building. Jarxis doesn't actually make any money off these vacuums, he mostly breaks even on them (charging extremely low prices for installation and maintenance), but the vacuums have a secret purpose. They do function as vacuums, but inside is a filtration and sorting mechanism that separates out the fairy dust naturally shed by fey creatures. The machine gathers up this rainbow colored powder so that Jarxis can use it as a component in his artifice, alchemy, and other endeavors.

TL;DR– Jarxis is a scheming old Leprechaun that makes technology, explosives, poisons, guns, weapons, armor, and potions. An ambitious Spriggan named Penculous has been influencing the Seelie court to blame all of their problems on Leprechauns, oppressing them and imprisoning them. Jarxis banded together with other leprechauns to fight back. Many leprechauns are imprisoned on false charges by the Seelie Court, including Jarxis's friend Crowley Twangle. Jarxis turned to the Unseelie Court for help and made a small amount of headway before a competing artificer for the Unseelie Court (Walfo) framed him for a crime involving gumballs. A high level functionary in the Unseelie Court (Dourshill The Arbiter of Merriment and Whimsy) has issued a bounty on Jarxis. Jarxis is in the process of gathering resources to find some way to help the imprisoned Leprechauns. He is convinced if he makes something amazing he could get the Unseelie back on his side and use their power to free the oppressed Leprechauns.

Curtain Call

Those visiting the Feywild will find that Jubilex's assault has destroyed every part of the plane. All the beautiful architecture, deadly flora/fauna, odd individuals, and nonsensical places were obliterated by the acid and poison that is Jubilex. The feywild stands a barren wasteland with lakes of acid and rivers of poison being the only breaks in the monotone barrens.

Luckily many fey refugees were able to escape with the help of the Leprechaun people. Their crafty methods of moving around unseen, and many ways of evading capture helped countless fey denizens escape Jubilex's wrath. These refugees were housed at quasquenton for a time until the Hail & Well Met Heroes lured Jubilex to the prime material plane and defeated him.

Now that the threat has passed the refugees return to the Fey realm to rebuild something atop the ashes of their former world. The Seelie and Unseelie are no more, all refugees have banded together to build the City of Ash. At least for a time the posturing and political intrigue will be set aside in favor of collaboration and mutual assistance.

After the City of Ash is established enough to stand on its own a democratic election will be held to determine the Ash King. To make it a fair election, the king will be determined in the ancient fey tradition by sale of candy bars. Whoever sells the most candy bars gets to be the king!
