The City State of Welmet

Biomia's most populous and active city is the port metropolis of Welmet. It is in many ways a point from which explorations of the “new world” can originate from much like some early cities in the Americas such as New Amsterdam or Williamsburg. The greater ocean is to the east of Welmet, just like the east coast of the United States. For reference, assume that Welmet is much like “fantasy Baltimore.”

City Districts

The city-state of Welmet is made up of the following neighborhoods, each with its own purpose, demographics, and wealth level.

Temple District

Perched among three hills on the northern side of the vibrant city of Welmet lies the illustrious Temple District. Dominated by the resplendent Temple of the Moon Goddess Selûne, with its gleaming silver spires and intricate lunar motifs, the district serves as a spiritual hub for devotees and seekers of wisdom for a variety of creeds. Radiating a palpable aura of reverence, the district is a tapestry of faiths, with shrines and sanctuaries dedicated to a myriad of deities. Cobblestone streets wind between bustling market stalls offering sacred artifacts and aromatic incense, while pilgrims clad in colorful robes traverse the thoroughfares, their faces alight with devotion. As day surrenders to night, the district is bathed in a mystical glow, resonating with the oftentimes cacophonous chants and prayers of worshippers from every corner of Welmet, embodying unity and reverence amidst the diverse tapestry of beliefs.

The following temples can be found here:

  • Ornn, stoic deity of the forge
  • Beshaba, deity of accidents, bad luck, misfortune, and random mischief, and a member of Tempus' pantheon
  • Eldath, goddess of peace and nature
  • Pelor, deity of the sun and law
  • Tyr, venerable deity of war

Apollo thought about building a temple in this district for Khonshu, but was on the fence because not everyone thinks Khonshu is a good god. However, he went to ask anyways, and the authorities turned him away anyways because of the same reason. They did reach agreement, though. All throughout the district there are posters showing off that there is a new temple dedicated to Khonshu in the Sovereign Desert. Surely putting this out in public will have no repercussions!

Other places of note in this district include:

  • Elements Inc. - Monastery of the four elements

Marketplace Quarter

The bustling Market Quarter of Welmet in the heart of the city pulsates with vibrant energy, a kaleidoscope of colors and scents that beckons visitors from far and wide. Famed for its prized spice Lunip, harvested exclusively from the fecund Halting Swamp to the south and west, the market teems with merchants hawking fragrant sacks of saffron, cinnamon, and cloves, their wares a testament to the city's rich culinary tradition. Amidst the aromatic spice stalls, vendors proudly display an array of freshly caught seafood, expertly prepared in the city's renowned culinary establishments, tantalizing passersby with the promise of exquisite flavors. Towering stacks of lumber, neatly bound bundles of paper, and sacks overflowing with grains form a bustling backdrop, a testament to Welmet's role as a vital supplier of essential goods to the realm. From the lively chatter of bargaining merchants to the sizzle of street food stalls, the Market Quarter embodies the vibrant heartbeat of Welmet, where the exotic and the everyday converge in a symphony of commerce and culture.

Graveyards and Gardens District

The Graveyard District of Welmet casts a somber shadow over the city, its atmosphere steeped in reverence and melancholy. Here, amidst the cobblestone streets lined with ancient mausoleums and weather-worn tombstones, one can find sanctuaries devoted to the deities of death and the underworld, such as the imposing Shrine of Osiris and the eerie Manse of the Raven Queen, their spires reaching towards the sky like skeletal fingers. Beneath the solemn silence of the grave markers lies a labyrinthine network of catacombs, echoing with the whispers of the departed. In the heart of the district lies “The Boneyard,” where large pits cradle the bodies of Welmet's less fortunate, their resting places marked by simple, unadorned markers. Yet amidst the mourning, there stands the imposing edifice of the Bleak Library, its halls housing the meticulous records of all those interred within Welmet's vast graveyard complexes, a testament to the city's reverence for the departed and its acknowledgment of the inevitable march of time.

The Docks

The Dock District of Welmet sprawls like a tangled web of desperation and danger, a haven for those clinging to the frayed edges of society. Here, amidst the ramshackle buildings and narrow alleyways, the downtrodden and desperate eke out a living. The district is dominated by the “Low Docks” which welcome sailing vessels from the Windless Sea. Here the clang of metal on metal echoes through the air, and brick kilns belch smoke into the sky, casting a pall over the landscape. Copper and iron works churn out their products with relentless efficiency, while glass factories shimmer with the promise of fragile beauty amidst the grit and grime. Yet amidst the hustle and bustle of industry, danger lurks around every corner. The shadows cast by the towering “High Docks” that pierce the sky, welcoming vessels that sail the aether seas and beyond add an extra layer of peril to an already precarious existence.

Nobles' Quarter

The Noble's Quarter of Welmet stands as a gilded bastion of opulence and privilege, where the elite of society reside and revel in their wealth and status. Lush gardens and elegant mansions line the meticulously maintained streets, each facade adorned with intricate carvings and gilded accents that speak of wealth beyond measure. Here, amidst the splendor, the finest shops and boutiques cater to the whims of the affluent, offering rare treasures and luxurious indulgences to those with coin to spare. The city guard, clad in polished armor and bearing the sigil of Welmet, patrol the streets with unwavering vigilance, ensuring the safety and security of the district's esteemed residents. At the heart of the quarter lies the royal palace and the grand museum, its halls adorned with priceless artifacts and works of art from across the realm, a testament to the refined tastes of Welmet's elite. Nearby, the majestic spire of the secretive and exclusive Drekia Academy reaches towards the heavens. Towering over the district like a sentinel of power and authority, the fortress-like headquarters of the Sanguine Order looms, its imposing walls a testament to the influence and prestige wielded by the city's most powerful organization.
